Answer: Desire Disconfirmation Theory: Oliver conceptualized the hypothesis of disconfirmation of desires in 1980. The foundation of the investigation was made on the experience of fulfillment where the standard proportion of study has been that fulfillment draws in relationship of past desires with the commonsense presentation (Wang Fu, 2013). This hypothesis expresses that a buyers complete fulfillment results from an assessment of the desire with the presentation result. In this manner, the two significant factors of this hypothesis are desire and the exhibition result which convinces the decision of the fulfillment measure. The fulfillment level of buyers is taken in as one of the central point to anticipate the buy affinity of client. Desire disconfirmation hypothesis can help a firm in expanding fulfillment through expanded clear execution of item or the decline in desire. Fig.1: First Expectation Disconfirmation Theory Desires can be characterized as the expectations of shoppers about the items and administrations execution. The EDT model has the ability of characterizing different habits of the buyers during the time spent buy. For all of you trying to get your Regular Action application in by the January 1 deadline, here are few FAQs that might help. For RA students What is the application deadline? The deadline is January 1. This means you can click submit on your application any time on January 1 or before, but try not to wait until the last minute! What happens if some of my school forms come in past the deadline? It is perfectly fine if, through no fault of your own, your school forms (e.g. teacher recommendations, secondary school report, transcript) come in after the January 1 deadline. We are much more understanding of and flexible with late documents from schools than with late documents from the applicant. Im taking tests in January, will these count? January is the last testing date that can be seen by the Admissions Committee (February will not be seen). If you will be taking the January test, just be sure to designate MIT to receive the scores. Please do not rush report your scores. We require either SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Plus Writing (or TOEFL). We also require 2 SAT Subject Tests (one in math, one in science). We only use the scores that make you look best, and we do abide by Score Choice. Is it too late to schedule an interview? The deadline to request an interview was December 10th, and has now passed. While highly recommended, the interview is not a required part of the application (and students whose interviews have been waived are at no disadvantage). You are welcome to request an interview from your Educational Counselor (EC) after the deadline, but do not expect that your request will be granted. If you have already interviewed with your EC, or have scheduled your interview for the near future, you are all set. Dont worry if your interview report has not yet appeared on your MyMIT Tracking. The deadline for ECs to submit their reports has not yet arrived. If you wish, you may now fill out the conducted interview form and we will be sure to get the interview report. I sent things in on time, but I dont see it on MyMIT tracking. What do I do? The Records Office is working hard, but please recognize that processing can take 2 weeks. You do not need to worry at this time about documents that are not showing on MyMIT. Do not send a second copy of any document at this time. Also, you do not need to call MIT Admissions at this time to check on any such documents (there is a time for this later). Will using a fee waiver affect my application? We are happy to accept fee waivers for any student (foreign or domestic) who needs one. Using a fee waiver will not negatively impact your admission. You may use the SAT Fee Waiver, the NACAC Fee Waiver, or a letter from a school official detailing your situation. We will accept other fee waiver forms as well. I forgot something and I want to update my application, how do I do that? If you need to update your application after you submit it, the best way is the February Updates and Notes form. On the last section of both Parts One and Two, there is a link that will allow you to preview your application as a PDF. This PDF is exactly how the admissions committee will see your application. Application tracking is available on MyMIT after you submit your Part 1. For this reason, I recommend submitting your Part 1 sooner rather than later, so that you can track your documents. I hope this is helpful. Happy Holidays and best wishes as you finish and submit the application! I searched for enough descriptive words to distinguish the greens I sawââ¬âemerald and viridian; olive, pea and lime; verdigris and malachite. I became giddy surrounded by robust greenery. Indeed, it was a green felicity, and the trials and doldrums of winter disappeared with the exhilaration I felt watching emerging blades, vines, and shoots. As the meadowââ¬â¢s growth flourished, I kept track of the succession of plants. Golden coins of flowering dandelions carpeted the new grass for a week before fluffing into white globes of seed- carrying filaments. The grasses grew taller. In the foreground, three boys, two apparently nine or ten years old, and one just past the toddler stage, stand in the knee-deep grass and daisies of a large hay meadow. Halting in their wanderings, they look toward the distant tree-edged expanse in the background where a figure in red ââ¬â mother, father, or sibling ââ¬âwaves to them. The light, at a low angle, burnishes the grass to brassy gold. It seems to me, the boys are abroad early, before sunrise and the start of chores, perhaps looking for nests, checking on the wild strawberry patches, or discovering the business of the in habitants of the fields. The waving figure may be calling them to breakfast. Homer portrays a simple moment of childhood freedom and exploration. The painting touches my spirit, for a hay meadow is one of the richest and best places to meet the natural world. On summer afternoons when the sun beats full on the meadow, I like to poke about the edges between the grass and the woods. Here, in a damp corner, I find tiny tight pink flower clusters atop plants with arrow-shaped leaves. For him, the cinema of the present is always and necessarily influenced by the past. Scorsese commands immense critical respect; whether juggling big budgets and mainstream connections with large studios, delivering star vehicles and box-office successes, or indulging in more personal projects, Scorsese has retained his reputation as ââ¬Å"the quintessential maverick auteurâ⬠(Andrew 21). We will write a custom essay sample on Reviewing Martin Scorsese or any similar topic only for you Order Now An independently minded cinephile, his relationship to popular cinema has been an extremely productive one. While best known for the savage but complex exploration of masculinity and violence in films such as the New York-based Taxi Driver (1976), the scorching biographical boxing picture Raging Bull (1980), the epic gangster narrative Goodfellas (1990), or the controversial The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Scorseseââ¬â¢s output has been extremely varied. This paper reviews three of his films: Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Gangs of New York (2002). Religion is a consistent theme in Scorseseââ¬â¢s films: almost all of his major male characters voice a fascination with religion in some form. Mean Streetsââ¬â¢ (1973) Charlie is obsessed with the idea of his own spiritual purpose. The archetypal selective devotee, his desire to do penance is at odds with his actions: ââ¬Å"he acts like heââ¬â¢s doing it for the others, but itââ¬â¢s a matter of his own prideâ⬠(Scorsese 48). Taxi Driverââ¬â¢s Travis Bickle believes himself to be acting out Godââ¬â¢s rage against the lowlife of New York city; Cape Fearââ¬â¢s (1991) Max Cady is likewise fixated; while Raging Bullââ¬â¢s Jake LaMotta punishes his body both in training and in the boxing ring in an attempt to atone for his sins. These earlier films seem to be leading towards Last Temptation of Christââ¬â¢s explicit wrestling with Christianity. Attracting intense reactions from some religious groups, the film, based on Nikos Kazantzakisââ¬â¢ novel, presents a non-biblical Jesus beset by doubts and fears about his identity and mission, constantly, oppressively tempted by evil. A human being much more than the incarnate Word of God, this Jesus is strongly tempted also sexually, and only by a superhuman effort of the will is he able to achieve a final victory. Scorsese argued that it was his intention to show Christ as a real man rather than as a faultless spiritual being. Thus, Christââ¬â¢s (Willem Dafoe) inner emotional struggle and the consistently female image of sin converge, if one is to accept Scorseseââ¬â¢s interviews, in making the film as much a working through of his own identity as the story of Christ: ââ¬Å"Jesus has to put up with everything we go through, all the doubts and fears and angerâ⬠¦he has to deal with all this double, triple guilt on the cross. Thatââ¬â¢s the way I directed it, and thatââ¬â¢s what I wanted, because my own religious feelings are the same.â⬠(Corliss 36) It is clear that the major objection of the protesters to this film had to do with its long final sequence, in which Jesus comes down from the cross and walks into an earthly paradise, where he marries first Mary Magdalene and then, as a widower, Mary, the sister of Lazarus. By her and her sister Martha, he has a number of children. The problem is that people who had not seen the film, or who had seen it but not very perceptibly, had no idea that these events happen in a fantasy sequence, a daydream-like temptation to the domestic life carefully formulated by Satan to discourage the crucified Jesus from living fully his mission of salvation. Moreover, it is a temptation sequence represented by Scorsese as a fantasy, something evident in the film language of the sequence, and as a temptation-fantasy that Scorsese has Jesus overcome: he returns to the cross and dies victorious. The Last Temptation of Christ can be interpreted in two distinct ways; either it posits Christ as a human being, or it raises Scorseseââ¬â¢s vision of masculine identity to an omnipotent spiritual level. Notions of masculinity, a sense of community and the influence of religion on personal identity are all themes common to Scorsese films. In fact, the film suggests an attempt to universalize masculine experience by having these themes transported from the usual urban, late twentieth-century setting to biblical times. Objections to the filmââ¬â¢s depiction of Jesus as sexual perhaps served to divert attention away from another more uncomfortable theme; that masculine identity is defined in terms of existential conflict and growing self-awareness, while women remain confined to earth, sexuality and Original Sin. Though Scorsese cannot be simply cast as a misogynist, his personal perspective and belief systems are unashamedly patriarchal, grounded in Catholicism. Women feature mainly on a symbolic level, serving as projections of male spiritual conflicts (even, it might be argued, in The Age of Innocence). Whether novel, romance, myth, epic, or film, narratives have relied on the presence of the ââ¬Å"heroâ⬠as a sign of the humanââ¬â¢s search of an ideal. Scorseseââ¬â¢s Taxi Driver portrays a character, Travis Bickle, who is alternately an inversion, a corruption, and a variation of the idea of the hero. The film constructs a ââ¬Å"literary cityâ⬠, an archetypical topos in a story of the mass and the individual, where the ââ¬Å"massâ⬠creates ââ¬Å"a peculiar kind of anti-community within the dissociated cultureâ⬠(Pike 100). A chain of ironies defines Bickle placed into this setting and defines a new universal truth: anonymity and isolation amid a dense population, an instantaneous repugnance with and attraction for the magnified extravagance and corruption of the city, an estrangement from others which grows with increasing closeness, and an anti-social behavior and a pathological psychology absurdly born of the quest for ideals. In Taxi Driver, Bickle sees metropolitan social order as a material hell in a period of a dying God (or already dead God). He places himself in an adversarial connection with the world in general, and he pursues the ideals of self-realization and spiritual reconciliation in ironically repulsive actions. In addition, Bickle maintains a wicked sense for the sacred, and this distorted piety or holiness is manifest in his discourse suggestive of the confession genre, in his wrath for an immoral society, and in his sympathy for the oppressed and browbeaten (archetypically rendered in the form of a prostitute). Bickle recognizes his status as Godââ¬â¢s lonely man. He writes in his confessional mode: ââ¬Å"Loneliness has followed me all my life. The life of loneliness pursues me wherever I go: in bars, cars, coffee shops, theaters, stores, sidewalks. There is no escape. I am Godââ¬â¢s lonely man.â⬠The opening montage of Scorseseââ¬â¢s Taxi Driver launches a series of optical themes, and the images of eyes, mirrors, and glass symbolize Bickleââ¬â¢s perception of this spiritually bankrupt and spiritually bereft environment. The director manages his editing and camera angles to highlight the protagonist seeing the world through mirrors or glass, particularly the rear-view mirror and the windshield of the taxi, through which all important characters enter: Sport and Iris in a brief glance in his mirror; Palantine in his rear-view mirror; and Betsy through the sheets of an all-glass office. In general, the film mirrors French Existentialist the influence, and the setting, lighting, and mise-en-scene ââ¬â especially in the darkness of the film ââ¬â owe a debt to film noir, contributing to the understanding of the struggle of the protagonist. Overall, Bickle represents something more than alienation and social disenfranchisement, since Godââ¬â¢s lonely man suffers in metaphysical misery because of the materialization of a world where the True, the Good, and the Beautiful have lost their meaning. In effect, Bickle is a prophet attacking Babylon, but without any assurance of liberation; he is also Theseus in the maze of the city but with no Olympus and no Ariadne. In this state of spiritual bleakness and spiritual poverty, Bickle retains an intuitive longing for the ideal ââ¬Å"but no longer possesses the capacity for identifying, exemplifying or realizing itâ⬠(Swensen 267). While isolation and crises of identity are key themes that permeate many of Scorseseââ¬â¢s films, they necessarily include explorations of community, or brotherhood against which the isolation, or level of identification for an individual can be measured. This is one of the major themes of one his most recent films, Gangs of New York. Obviously, the directorââ¬â¢s explorations of community and brotherhood stem partly from his commentary on his personal experiences, his sense of his home community and of the people he has known. In most cases this sense of docu-realism extends only so far as setting. This film is concerned not only with political, social, and economic conflicts, but also spiritual conflict. In one of his interviews about Gangs of New York, Scorsese states: [During the Civil War] the North and South were fighting for causes. The nativists [whose slogan was ââ¬Å"America for Americansâ⬠] and the Irish were fighting for the right to live and the right to live together, but they were dying for it, too. If people believe in something strongly enough theyââ¬â¢re going to die for it, and thatââ¬â¢s a major problem in the world today. In the film ââ¬â as in todayââ¬â¢s world ââ¬â religion is used in a militant way. (Scorsese 1) This film is also a characteristic of violence in many of Scorseseââ¬â¢s films: ââ¬Å"The 20th century was arguably the most violent in human history, but the most violent century in American history was the 19th. Poor people, political parties, and gangs would demonstrate, and there was violence constantly.â⬠(Scorsese 2) Alongside the romance of the gangster and of male ritual that is so much in evidence in this film, Amsterdam Vallon and Bill ââ¬Å"the Butcherâ⬠Cutting can both be understood in terms of a journey towards salvation through self-knowledge. The themes in Taxi Driver, The Last Temptations of Christ, and Gangs of New York are dominated by the search for self-awareness: ââ¬Å"the individual is trapped in solitude morale and can escape from itâ⬠¦if he or she comes to see their condition and then extend themselves to others and then to Godâ⬠(Hess 20). Scorseseââ¬â¢s preoccupations are evident in his work and in his many interviews. Shortly after the opening of his film The Last Temptation of Christ, Scorsese, commented, ââ¬Å"I made it as a prayer, an act of worship. I wanted to be a priest. My whole life has been movies and religion. Thatââ¬â¢s it. Nothing else.â⬠(Kelly 6) Works Cited Andrew, Geoff, Stranger than Paradise: Maverick Film-makers in Recent American Cinema. The basic factors mainly signify the physical and natural resources, capital resources as well as unskilled labors. The advanced factors are represented by the ââ¬Å"digital data communication infrastructureâ⬠(Dogl, Holtbrugge and Schuster, 2012, p. 194) and educated personnel. The demand conditions symbolize the demand for various types of domestic product and services within a country in a certain industry. In this case the attributes like the composition, amount and pattern of expansion along with internationalization of domestic claims are quite significant. Supporting industries signify those industries with which the company can share their activities intersectorally in the value chain like for instance marketing, suppliers, delivery channels and technology advancement. Firm strategy describes the conditions of the c ountry and the ways in which a firm can be operated. This factor is also determined by the domestic rivalry, goal of the firm as well as individual and formation of new business of the firm. The competitive advantage of the firm is also determined by the external factors such as government and chance. ... According to Stone and Ranchhod (2006), Porterââ¬â¢s focus on the magnitude of rivalry and competition, this is an absolute diversion from the traditional concepts of economic thinking. Porterââ¬â¢s Diamond framework is found in most of the books in management academics, which suggests that like firms, countries are also competing with one another. Peng (2009) refers that the Diamond model is one of the modern theories, which provides a perfect realistic amalgamation of country, industry and firm in order to explain international competitiveness of the countries whereas other theories have previously provide explanation about one or two aspects. Hill (2009) claims that the theory proposed by Porter appears to be true but has never undergone through rigorous testing. However Porterââ¬â¢s Diamond Model is subjected to criticism from both management and economics school. The critics from the management school suggests the Diamond Model of Porter does not focuses on the attribut es of the trading partners present in the home country (Rugman, 1990), and at the same time it also ignores the influence of the multinational companies on the competitive success of the country (Dunning 1992, 1993). The Model does not work for the smaller nations (Bellak & Weiss 1993; Cartwright 1993). Rugman (1990) suggests to include the features of the largest trading partners of the home nation, which would be an extension of the of Porterââ¬â¢s Diamond Model. This ââ¬Å"double diamondâ⬠approach should address the competitiveness that depends on both foreign and domestic diamond and the management of the domestic firms will be able to exploit both the diamonds in order to sustain in global competition (Rugman 1990; Rugman & Dââ¬â¢Cruz 1993). With this the war of independence commenced. On the 4th of July 1776 the declaration of independence was adopted and with this the United States of America was formed. Initially the British had to contend with only the Americans but gradually other European powers joined the fray. In France there was a great deal of public support for the American cause and it began to provide aid to the American colonies. Further a treaty of alliance was signed between France and colonies. According to this treaty France would support the colonies in their struggle with the British. This resulted in a war between Britain and France in 1778. The beleaguered British proffered the olive branch to the colonies and on the 3rd of September 1783 the independence, freedom and sovereignty of these American colonies were recognised by Britain. Thus, despite several initial hardships the Americans emerged as a strong and coherent nation (THE ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE: Chapter 3). Subsequent to the achievement of independence Congress passed a resolution on the 10th of May 1776, requiring the colonies to form new governments that would enhance the happiness and safety of their constituents. Accordingly most of the states drew up their own constituents. In order to protect certain rights whose infringement had led to secession from Britain, a bill of rights was incorporated into these constitutions. Some of these were freedom of speech, freedom of elections, freedom of the press and the right to change the government. A major problem faced by this fledgling nation was that of expansion in the western part of the United States.... This essay stresses that a major problem faced by this fledgling nation was that of expansion in the western part of the United States. The pioneers had settled here and these places were highly dispersed. Since, they were isolated by mountain ranges and large distances from the political authorities in the east, they had formed their own governments. Moreover, these far flung lands were claimed by several states and no resolution of this dispute seemed to be in sight. This problem of over lapping claims was resolved by states like New York and Virginia, which ceded all their claims to these territories. In this manner national sovereignty was strengthened. This paper makes a conclusion that the new policy repudiated the time-honored concept that colonies existed for the benefit of the mother country, were politically subordinate, and peopled by social inferiors. Instead, it established the principle that colonies ("territories") were an extension of the nation and entitled, not as a privilege but as a right, to all the benefits of equality. On the 21st of February 1787 a conference was held in which the Virginia plan was proposed by Madison. The Constitution proposed in this convention was sent for ratification to the 13 states of the Union. Delaware was the first state to ratify it on the 7th of December 1787. The Congress is not empowered to decide as to whether a particular person is to be tried or not. This power is vested solely with the executive. Daft, et al., 2010 It is mainly concerned with the process of planning, setting up and organizing systematic tasks within the organization according to the organizations needs and employees capability. In order for the strategy to be effective and efficient, management put the responsibility to their employees and explains how the implementation process of their organization work arrangement will be in their management system. (DuBrin, 2008) Virtual organization is an association that exists but cannot be physically seen by the naked eye. Its a concept that changed in line with the current vast developments. (Burn, J., et al., 2012) The virtual organization is very flexible and responsive because it does not necessarily require an office to operate but the existence of this virtual organization can be felt and experienced throughout the business process. Thurow (2011) states that business processes refers to the networking system used along the production process which conducted virtually through the way of communicating using electronic devices as the main telecommunication form. According to Parker, Craig and Craig (2008), matrix structured organization has the advantage of giving the opportunity for the top management to develop their skills in conducting and managing project-based strategy as well as gaining experience. It also practices a decentralization decision-making system that encouraging improvements of employees self motivation level as they have the chance to make decisions and act independently. Matrix structure organization also creates the flexibility of cross-communication system in exchanging information and ideas among the team members from different departments which can helps on saving time and cost. Question 14 Maslows need theory consist of physiology needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. Each level must be completely fulfilled before moving on to the next level. (Robbins, 2009) Physiology needs refers to our physical needs. Safety needs are needs of safety and security. Both levels are the low-order needs that can be satisfied internally. The high-order needs that can be satisfied internally are the social needs that seek for love and affection, then the esteem needs that refer to the needs of self-esteem and lastly the self actualization which is the needs of becoming fully matured human. (Shajahan, 2007) Question 7 Scientific management mainly focuses on the application of scientific method of study and also analysis into a problem which occur during management. Scientific Management basically referring on understands what one wants his subordinates to do and see it to be done efficiently and effectively. (Sahni and Pardeep, 2010) According to Murugan (2007), among the principles of scientific management are Science not rule of Thumb, scientific training and development of workers, close cooperation between employees and manager, equal division of works and also responsibility, maximum prosperity of employer and employee and mental revolutions. Question 15 Hackman and Oldhams Job Characteristics Model consists of five characteristic such as skill variety which means variety increases when overcome new problems each day and implementing various skills in completing tasks. Secondly, task identity, where employees working performances is acknowledgeable. Third, task significant is where an employee contributes positive result to the company. Fourth, autonomy is where the employees are given the freedom in planning while carrying out tasks. Lastly, the feedback where there will be an evaluation on employees performance in order to improve any deficiency. (Daft and Marcic, 2010) The application of these characteristic may increase the productivity and produces more motivated and productive the employees. Question 13 Montana and Charnov states the Expectancy Theory of motivation was proposed by Victor Vroom, a business school professor. The theory is more on the individual goal which focuses more on outcomes and their expectations while achieving it. (Jex and Britt, 2008) Employees are able to receive rewards according to his or her performance while working. The theorys method will keep the employees motivated at all times as they hold their personal expectations of the rewards. (Montana and Charnov, 2008) The expectancy of increasing effort by the employees will lead to the increment of performance which will increase the productivity and positive result. Question 10 According to Wright (2010), Hawthorne studies were first attempted by Elton Mayo showing how lighting affected the employees working performance. But it shows that the physical conditions of the workplace do not influence the performance or motivation. In his finding, taking interest in all individual was enough to increase their work efficiency and output. Hence, the Hawthorne Experiment continues to show its result from time to time. Companies which value their employees ideas and opinions will result a higher standard of achievement. (Wong, 2010) This will also increase the ability and self esteem of the employees. Thus, increase their performance and productivity while working. Question 12 Montana and Charnov (2008), states the theory of X and Y was proposed by Douglas McGregor. In theory X, managers will assume that their employees are less ambitious, less responsible, dislike their job and prefer to wait for instructions rather than to lead a task. Managers with theory X are stricter and may threaten their employees to motivate them. But manager who holds the theory Y will assume that the employees are more responsible, willing to do work, more creative and self-directed. Thus, in theory Y the managers will not control much on their employees because they believe that employees are capable to perform well. (Shermerhorn, 2011) Question 16 The effectiveness of an organization internal communication can be improved through creating forum site on social websites such as Facebook and Twitter for discussion related to a matter. (Heath, 2005) Furthermore, any perceptions and ideas proposed by the employees should be considered and not being excluded in order to improve good relationship with other teamwork. Next, employers and employees should also instill proactive attitude to ask when in doubts related to a matter in order to avoid conflicts and distorted message. Lastly, employees should be train on communication skills to improve their self-esteem and communicating potential. (Quirke, 2012) Question 5 Public sectors are basically a bureaucratic government-based organization which normally focusing more on providing services to public rather than making profit. (Lienert, 2009) A simple example of a public sector organization is the government hospitals. The organization emphasizes more on accommodating the health service to the community by providing free to low-cost medical aid. However, privates sectors are non-government owned organization and runs on the main motive on making profit. (Rees and Porter, 2008) For example, supermarket such as Tesco and Carrefour in Malaysia are operated by private enterprises and not the government. Question 6 Planning stage is one of the functional approaches involved in the management process. According to Schwalbe (2006), it concerns activities such as setting goals and objectives of the work in an effort to keep it on track throughout the operation process. Next step would be, create and considering relevant strategies to achieve goals effectively. At last, the final step is simulating plans to coordinate and objectify activities in various possible ways it can succeed. (Lewis, et al., 2006) Within this stage, it requires a lot of critically thinking creativity and innovative aspects from that individual to come out with a radical and quantum ideas. Question 9 Fordism is a term that was named after an American entrepreneur; Henry Ford which was the founder of Ford Motor Company. (Schhlosser and Simonson, 2009) Fordism is a philosophy of manufacturing that being conducted based on the Taylorism theory that emphasizes in machine and efficiency of employees working performance. Fordism philosophy aimed to increase the productivity and reduce costs by adjusting output, set the installation process in phases, and dividing the work into small tasks according to employees expertise. (Blyton and Jenkins, 2007) The effectiveness of the philosophy enables an organization to maximize their profit and performance. Question 11 Personality is an influential matter that affecting a persons decision. It is developed through their education, ways of socialization and nurturing since they were a child. Jennings Principles of Marketing (BUS 330) Instructor: Debra McCoskey-Reisert January 28, 2012 Power of Wind There is a large sector in the United States that believes wind energy is an excellent alternative resource. There is also a group of people that believe that the wind turbines that are used to generate wind energy is a bad idea because they obstruct the natural view, causes death to birds, and generates noise pollution. They also argue that wind energy is not a dependable source of energy because the wind does not blow continually.Wind as a viable source of energy will be evaluated from a positive and negative perspective. Wind energy has long history of being used as a power source (Berry, History of Windmills, 2011). Considering the current issues that the global community faces concerning green house gases and pollution alternative energy sources must be evaluated. As of 2010 the United States Energy Information Administration listed Saudi Arabia, Ru ssia, and the United States as being the top three world oil producers (U. S. Department of Energy). The top three oil consumers are the United States, China, and Japan. As of 2009 the United States Energy Information Administration listed Saudi Arabia, Canada, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait as having the highest level of proven world oil reserves (U. S. Department of Energy). In 2010 the United States Imported close to forty nine percent of the petroleum products that it consumed in that same year (U. S. Department of Energy). About half of those imports came from nations located in the Western Hemisphere. The world currently faces a shrinking petroleum based energy supply and a rapidly growing pollution problem as a result of the dependency on petroleum.Countries around the world increasingly have to compete with each other in order to secure petroleum based energy resources. China and India continue to place a higher demand on the worlds petroleum supply because of their rapidly growing e conomies. High gasoline prices, global warming concerns, and fears that fossil fuel resources are likely hitting peak supply while global demand is surging demands the modern worldââ¬â¢s undivided attention. Oil producing countries in the Middle East currently hold a forty percent share of the worldââ¬â¢s oil market.Wind energy has the ability to market itself. There is a large sector around the world with a belief that wind energy is an excellent alternative resource. Wind farms are also one of the emerging green technologies that are beginning to show their true value. Between the year 2000 and 2010 the wind power capacity of the United States jumped exponentially (see page 6). That is a direct result of the hundreds of new wind farms that came on line in the American power grid. In 2010 global wind installation hit 196,000 gigawatts. In a recent study conducted by the United Nations said renewable energy accounted for sixty percent of new electricity generation capacity in E urope and more than half in the United States of America. The human relationship with the wind has been a long one with the use of sailing ships and windmills. For centuries past the wind was used as the main power source for sailing ships. The use of windmills seems to have started with the Persians for grinding grain (between 500 and 900 A. D. ). Windmills started appearing in Europe around the time of the Crusades (1096 -1270).The European design is very different from the Persian one and there is an ongoing debate whether the Europeans developed the windmill themselves or the Crusaders had taken the idea back to Europe (Berry, History of Windmills, 2011). The earliest windmills found in Europe were a post mill construction. The main structure of the windmill sits on top of a post and could be rotated to face the wind. Human power was needed to rotate the windmill to face the direction of the prevailing winds. The windmill was turned by a long beam that was attached horizontally to the body of the mill. The mills sat upon a tripod structure that consisted of two crossed beams resting on the ground with four angled beams coming up to support the post in the center. These windmills used a horizontal axis allowing the sails of the windmill to take better advantage of the wind. The power was then transferred to machines by cogs and gears. In 1650 smock mills were developed with just the top part of the windmill being turned to face the wind. This was a huge improvement to the windmill because the sail structure was much lighter and easier to turn.Permanent structures could be built to house the mill. Brick and stone tower mills were built using the new smock mill method. Smock mills received that name because they resembled a nineteenth century countrymanââ¬â¢s smock. They were built in a tapered, boarded, Octagonal shaped tower form. The Chinese built their first documented windmill in 1219 A. D. and was used to grind grain. In the late 1300ââ¬â¢s the Dut ch developed a new sail design that increased efficiency. The sail was constructed with a leading edge that created aerodynamic lift.Windmill sails were made of cloth stretched over a wooden frame. Some windmill designs incorporated trimmed sails allowing them to take better advantage of the variable wind conditions. The English used a fantail on their windmills that allowed them to be turned by the wind. The large Dutch designed windmills continued to be used all across Europe until the development of the steam engine in the 1880ââ¬â¢s. The use of steam power caused a decline in the use of large tower windmills. In the United States windmills were used in the west for pumping water to the ranchers live stock. In the mid 1900ââ¬â¢s Charles Brush developed a huge wind dynamo that generated electricity and became fascinated with the possibility of producing free energy for the general public. Beginning in the 1930ââ¬â¢s a group of disgruntled ranchers got together and started the development of wind energy. The ranchers were facing rising prices, power outages and poor customer service. Robert Righter is a historian that has done extensive research on wind energy in the United States. The first wind farms were built in the state of California in the 1980ââ¬â¢s.The Altamont Pass, located near the San Francisco Bay area there are still some of the older and much smaller turbines. They only had a rotor diameter of 15 meters and a capacity of tens of kilowatts. The new turbines being manufactured today have a capacity of 1. 5 ââ¬â 2. 5 megawatts (MW), rotor diameters as great as 100 meters allowing the blades to sweep an area the size of a football field. Wind power is on the rise in the United States with capacity jumping by 45 percent at the end of 2007 and capacity reaching to 17 gigawatts (GW).Wind power is an attractive alternative to fossil fuels such as coal and oil because it is an energy source that does not produce pollution or climate alter ing greenhouse gases. When the massive turbines have been installed the only fuel that is needed to run them is the wind. Wind resources found around the world are so massive that they could easily meet the worlds current energy needs. A study that was conducted by researchers at Stanford University found that global wind energy potential in the year 2000 was about 72,000 gigawatts (GW), almost five times the worldââ¬â¢s total energy demand at that time. The technology used to tap into the wind energy resources is getting much cheaper. In the early 1980ââ¬â¢s electricity produced by the wind cost as much as 30 cents per kilowatt hour. In 2007 the cost had fallen to 10 cents per kilowatt hour. There are various incentives in the form of tax credits and feed in tariffs that make electricity generated from the wind cost competitive with electricity generated from natural gas and coal. Maria Sicilia of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has stated that a $30. 0 dollar tax per to n of carbon dioxide emitted would allow electricity produced on wind farms could compete in most markets without subsidies [ (International Energy Agency, 2009) ]. Even with no tax being placed on carbon emissions the growth of wind power is very likely to continue. The European Union has set a goal of getting 20% of its energy from renewable resources by 2020, with a large portion of it coming from wind power. The United States Department of Energy has laid out a plan to get 20% of the energy needed in the United States from wind power by 2030 [ (U. S.Department of Energy, 2008) ]. Asia may become the biggest market for new wind installations over the next five years. The wind does not blow all of the time and wind farms cannot be placed in some areas of the United States. For wind to stay on the path of expansion the industry will have to build new transmission lines and improve the integration of electricity produced by the wind into the power grid [ (IBM) ]. The industry is also vulnerable financially if subsidies are suddenly phased out. Some groups will say that the massive wind turbines cause the needless deaths of birds. The effect that the wind farms have on the view is one reason that has been cited for saying no to wind power. There have been issues concerning the noise that the turbines create. Wind energy is an excellent and valuable resource that can be used as a replacement for dirty fossil fuels and the dangers of nuclear power. It cannot be the only replacement for those energy sources but it can be used in conjunction with solar power, geothermal, and hydroelectric to fulfill our nationââ¬â¢s energy requirements. The use of coal as an energy source for the generation of electricity can gradually be scaled down. Mankind has had a long relationship with the wind as an energy source and should continue to use it well into the future. Pollution has become a major problem that is affecting the climate and that problem should be resolved on a glob al scale with all nations working together for the common good. Local studies indicate that youth violence is increasing. In addition, Americaâ⬠s youth, like adults are now more frequently using guns instead of fist to settle their disputes. While the public is ready to believe that school violence is definitely present, some local leaders and school administrators are not willing to recognize that it is happening in front of their own eyes. They think that people will boycott the communities, their schools will be labeled unsafe and they will be blamed for failing to keep peace and order. Gang activity at school is particularly susceptible to ââ¬Å"the Ostrich syndrome,â⬠as many of the administration ignore the problem. A big loss that occurs is that opportunities to help the youth and reduce violence are lost. Finally, there is sometimes a contradiction between school policies and school practice. Many districts and schools have broad regulations for dealing with violence, and the school enforcement may either be uneven or laidback. This creates a situation where teachers do not feel supported when they necessitate discipline, students do not feel protected and the delinquents will then think that he or she will not be punished. On the other hand, administrators express dismay that the teachers so not enforce policies in the classroom. Despite these inconsistencies, the government, communities and schools have come up with many promising types of anti- violence approach, and social and personal transformation focusing on discipline. Most have originated in urban areas, where youth violence was first identified. The federal government has money set aside for after school programs focused on gang prevention and other recreational community activities. Most of these activities are focused on breaking the cycle of violence. The most effective proved to be the long-term family interventions involving, religious and recreational organizations. For example, programs in parenting and family relationships, especially those focused on non-violence and substance abuse can protect children from learning violence at home. Out of school programs keep youth entertained while the family is unavailable. These programs can also provide youths with attention from caring role models. They also keep the youth away from negative influences on the street. Programs can offer assistance with schoolwork and develop positive values. Helping young people find employment is an important way for communities to reduce property crime and build the youths self-esteem and sense of responsibility. It also helps the youth see how vital it is to their future to stay in school and further their education and career. Another positive aspect to providing jobs and job training is that it can reduce stress that can trigger violence. ââ¬Å"In 1878 economist Carroll D. Wright from Massachusetts Commissioner of Statistics noted that more than 67% of convicts in the state were recorded as ââ¬Ëhaving no occupationâ⬠: of 220 men sentenced to one year 147 were without trade or any regular means of earning a livingâ⬠(Currie) Anti-violence and programs that run in the school can run from a range of ideas. From general education improvement to interventions to target specific groups of students. They involve parents in a variety of roles and community leaders and resources. The goal is to create a peaceful non-violence school. A commitment to enforcing violence prevention helps the students and the staffs feel safe. In addition to zero tolerance for guns, some school also have zero tolerance for other types of behavior such as assaulting a teacher were violent students will be removed from the classrooms. It might not affect some students to be expulsed from school so school responses to certain type of acts include legal prosecution. Since there is a strong use of drug sales and violence in the schools by the students, administrators make special efforts to keep the school. To keep students from bringing in weapons some schools use metal detectors and administer random acts of searching studentsâ⬠bodies and possessions. Teachers used to be the most common type of security but with increasing school violence, schools are hiring security guards to patrol the sites. With school security the most common type of measure is monitoring the students in the hallways and places where they get together the most, like cafeterias, bathrooms and the p.e. field. Most violent prone school may even form relations with the police to periodically visit the schools and regularly patrol the halls. Probation officers with on site offices can provide help to students who have already been in illegal trouble. Early intervention is necessary to prevent youth violence. Elementary education training in anger management, impulse control, mediation and conflict resolution skills can prevent youth from participating in violence as they mature. Early discussions about negative consequences of gang membership and providing positive way to get needs met can protect them from future gang recruitment efforts. Some schools have a specially trained safety coordinator whose primary function is to coordinate anti-violence programs and offer crisis counseling and mediation. Other types of programs offer incentives for positive behavior such as recognition and reward system for good citizenship. The goal is to bring about change in the students so that their behavior is constructive. Effective gang strategies involve all school operations and staff. It requires good communications and security and staff trained in crisis intervention. Schools not only need to acknowledge their presence but actively investigate its extent and determine who its gang members are, what they do and where are their hang out spots. The first step is to establish the fact that gang presence such as clothing, paraphernalia, flashing signs or shouting slogans and writing graffiti on school or personal property will not be tolerated. Discipline measures, practiced consistently show the schools seriousness. Staff who takes a personal interest in individual members by holding personal conferences and counseling can help loosen the hold of the gang, by meeting informally with members and show them positive experiences that would otherwise be lacking in their lives. To do this some staff members may need to change certain attitudes about gang members and spend a little more time than they would with them. If that does not work offering counseling in a variety of outside agencies and involving parents and making them aware of the choices and consequences that their child is taking may help change the attitude of the child. If all else fails gang members can be transferred to alternative schools for more intensive support. Concern about increasing youth violence is being routed into a variety of innovative and hopefully effective programs across the country. The most effective programs acknowledge that gang activity and violence exists in their community. Use all available resources like law enforcement and social services. Involve families into both school and community programs, and prepares to engage in long-term effort for positive experiences. In all communities it is likely that sometimes anti-violence work will be compromised by lack of resources and time. Even the most dedicated individuals may experience moments of frustration. Early evaluations in well-organized programs is possible and even though statistics show that youth violence is steadily increasing the effort and slight expenditure are necessary. Out of the 60 percent of American college students who drink regularly, two-thirds of these students also report engaging in frequent binge-drinking (NIAAA, 2015). While students may be aware of some of the short-term consequences of engaging in these binge-drinking behaviors, which can range from being hungover, to showing poor academic performance, to assault and/or violence, public health concerns stemming from excessive use of alcohol often have far reaching, long term effects.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The paper was supported by resources from the US Department of Health and Human Services, the NIAAA, the Medical Research Service of the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation. METHODOLOGY: The paper was a qualitative review utilizing mostly correlational methods and containing both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. MAIN POINTS/FINDINGS: The authors first looked at the premature aging hypothesis and its association with alcoholism. They reported that most studies found that as an individual ages the harmful neurological effects of alcohol become more pronounced and the brain is more susceptible to permanent damage or greater reduction in size of the cerebral cortex, corpus callosum, hippocampus, and cerebellum. There is also an association between neuropsychological and psychomotor deficits in older alcoholics. In terms of gender the review found evidence episodic memory tasks were performed better on by women across all varying degrees of drinking habits (non, light, moderate, and heavy) than men. Men performed better on visuospatial tasks, but only in the non and light drinker groups. fMRI data looking at gender differences in alcohol-related brain impairment showed inconsistent results and the authors suggested that further research is necessary in this area of study. Results of twin, family, and adoption studies showed that there are genetic risk factors that influence susceptibility to alcoholism, whileShow MoreRelatedLibrary Management204752 Words à |à 820 Pages Library and Information Center Management Recent Titles in Library and Information Science Text Series Library and Information Center Management, Sixth Edition Robert D. Cesal argues that the citizen architect should be concerned with their role within the community and how to better serve the people that comprise it. A true citizen architect is not driven by the financial gain of the projects themselves or the social status attributed to them. Instead the architect should re-evaluate their role as a true servant of the public and implement that sense of purpose to drive their craft rather than just the desire for social status. Cesal desires for architects to go beyond their professional title and actively seek out ways to better their environment by bridging the gap between architects and their communities. He is asking architects to take responsibility in their communities and not merely pass the problems on to other public servants. There is a need for architects and politics to coexist to on equal grounds within projects to ultimately decipher what is best for the communal area. Cesal argues that with these complications skyrocketing within the past years and consistently increasing, architects should have considered this an issue long ago. Although we cannot turn back the clock, we are able to control what happens today and the day that are to come. One of the most important pieces of insight that Cesal exposes to his audience is that architects need to embrace this notion in all matters of their professional life to truly reap the societal benefits from it. Answer: Introduction The following assignment throws light upon the article Half a Defence of Positive Accounting Research by Paul V Dunmore. In this research article, the author gives his viewpoint towards possible merits and demerits of positive accounting theory in the context of modern era. In this article, the author also talks about the usage of positive accounting theory and a accounting research program instead of normal accounting approach of PAT (Profit after Tax). This has been done with possible conjecture of epistemology and ontology. However,. The author also throughs light on several limitations of positive accounting theory based on the foundation of several theoretical frameworks. Summary of the given article Robson McCartan (2016) opine that the concept of positive accounting theory is derived based on scientific research analysis. The given article also summarizes the positive impact and effect of positive accounting in the world of accounting. This concept also highlights the relationship of two variables and correlation between the given variables. Wilkinson Durden (2015) opines that past research articles infers that there is a positive correlation between positive accounting theory and the concept of scientific research analysis. The given article talks about the different classes of the accounting theory and only theoretical induction is not an evident tool in case of accounting theory. Due to this reason, one single observation is not suitable enough in case of any specific theory in case of accounting. Therefore, ranges of observations are required to support a specific accounting theory. In addition to this, the author has developed an idea of accounting research program in or der to evaluate about the existence of PAT in the current system of accounting. The given research program will main to develop the process of human interactions with the help of effective explanations of the concept of PAT in accounting. In addition to this, it can be inferred that while doing statistical hypothesis testing, it has been found that Poppers falsification criterion can be considered weaker. Smith (2014) infers that the given positive accounting program can be considered as extremely powerful, however, the given concepts has certain weakness associated with it. However, the theoretical background of this program is useful; however, the practical implication of the program is not at all powerful. These drawbacks can be summarized with the help of the following points:- Lack of appropriate hypothesis testing Lack of parameters while evaluating numerical interest Insufficient replica of the past theories Only qualitative data is being used rather than statistical testing of data. In addition to this, it can be deduced that positive accounting theory may not help to attain scientific objectives. Due to this reason, it can be the concept of normal science described in Kohn can be considered as perfect for fitting the concept of positive theory of accounting. This is done through through Kuhnian crisis and revolution. In addition to this, various reasons behind conducting of statistical hypothesis have been revived by Popper. It has been observed that 5% of any given statistical test is considered to be rejected at 5% confidence level. The article explains and evaluates proper concepts of ontology and epistemology with proper justification of testing of different hypothesis. The article summarizes different forms of qualitative aspects of accounting and completely ignores the quantitative part. Finally, the article recognizes the need of advanced theoretical accounting models to reduce the total amount of vulnerability in the process of research. Apart from this , the given research article also helps to analyse the process of positive research and how it can be utilized in the field of accounting. Research Questions The article can be evaluated with the help of several research questions based on the importance of positive accounting theory and the program related to it. The given research questions are as follows:- To analyse the exact loopholes of positive accounting theory related to scientific research To evaluate whether positive research programme can be evaluated as an effective alternative of PAT To investigate different aspects of ontology and its impact on the given positive research accounting programme. However, in accordance to the given research questions some possible research hypothesis have also been considered based on this given article. These are as follows:- H0- Universal existence, which is way beyond the imagination power of individuals The alternative hypotheses are as follows:- H1- Every event takes place because of a reason in this universe H2- Every event, which is happening, can be taken into consideration by means of observations. The entire three hypotheses can be analysed with the help of concepts of positive research accounting. For example, in case of first hypothesis, it can be inferred that group interaction can be implied through various concepts of accounting. By means of this, the first hypothesis can be tested. On the other hand, the second hypothesis can be tested through concepts of ontology and epistemology. In addition to this, the third hypothesis can be testing through falsification. This can be done with the help of proper observation of all the theories of the research. These hypothesis and research questions have been evaluated based on the given research article. Theoretical Framework The given and the concept of positive accounting theory can be further evaluated with the help of an effective theoretical framework. Effective usage of the accounting research program discussed in the given article As per the given article, it can be inferred that there is a huge demand for the given positive accounting theoretical program. There are wide reasons behind it. It has been inferred that in case of hypothesis testing, different vulnerable variables can be noticed. Due to this reason, there is a huge need of stringed hypothesis testing. This can be further done with the help of the given accounting research program (Guthrie Parker, 2016). Concepts of ontology and epistemology The concepts ontology and epistemology plays a key role in the field of accounting. The former concept opines the behaviour of the variables in accordance to the question, while the later concept infers about new areas of areas of research (Gaffikin Aitken, 2014).. Both these concepts also explain the need for the two in accounting and it also highlights the limitations of positive accounting theory. Positive research accounting theory The concept of positive research accounting theory is based on several assumptions. However, the term positive research can be considered to be broad with respect to positive accounting theory. It also assumed wide wings of social science related to various forms of accounting observations. In addition to this, the theoretical framework of the article explains of Popperian criterion, qualitative research in research practices of Popper, strengths and weakness of statistical data as well as qualitative approach. Based upon the theoretical framework, the strengths and weakness of the article can be evaluated (Jones Aiken, 2015) Significance and Limitations of the article The article helped in understanding the accounting theories from a wider perspective. This ensures that casual relation with respect to humans is covered in the theories (Jones Aiken, 2015). Different types of intellectual research have been taken care of by the article. Apart from these, the aspect that has been shed light on includes the cause and relationship of the humans and their relation with accounting theory. The understanding of the positive accounting programs have been analyzed in the article successfully. This enhances the scientific research and the base of understanding based on the rational research methods. The research article can also be considered significant as it helps to analyze certain factors of accounting related to human psychology. This has been done with the help of the theories of ontology and epistemology. It also develops a systematic procedure of accounting information with establishment of normal science theory by Kohn. The article also throws light on estimation of research parameters, however, it failed to highlight the manner while doing so. However, on the contrary it might be said that the human awareness of the accounting theory programs have not been included in the article. The loophole further includes no data collection procedure from the humans. In addition to this, there is no link to the primary method or secondary method of data collection. The article must have supported the accounting theory with relevant models. The conclusion that has been mentioned in the article lacks the feasibility due to unavailability of quantitative data. Finally, the article is based on the viewpoint of the author, as it is reflective in nature. Hence, in few aspects the conclusion might be questioned as it is the perception derived from only secondary materials. However, this article is important while looking after the positive accounting theory. Conclusion It can concluded the article has been important whole analyzing different aspects of positive accounting theory. On the contrary as mentioned above, it lacked few rational idea. However, it is crucial that accounting theory must be based on rational and scientific research. The deep indulgence of epistemological approach in the theory is not only framed hypothesis serves as one of the base for positive accounting theory. This should be ensured through collection of data. References Dyckman, T. R., Zeff, S. A., (2015). Accounting Research: Past, Present, Future.Abacus,51(4), pp.511-524. Schubert had a distinctive talent for creating music that depicted both the spirit and nuance of the text; the voice and the piano expressed every shade and color of the poem. Schubert Earlà ¶nigh is termed a through-composed art song. Schubert also created the song cycle?a well-thought-out group of individual songs that together tell a story, similar to a concept album. Alliterated is a German word indicating an informal evening gathering during which Lieder (art songs) are reformed. Schubert held Cafeterias a social gathering for music and poetry and Lieder that featured the songs and piano music of Franz Schubert. Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer. He was something of a streak composer and wrote music for solo piano almost exclusively. Inspired by his marriage to Clara, he composed almost nothing but art songs, most of them about love. His wife, Clara one of the great piano virtuosos of the nineteenth century, was also a gifted composer. By his own request, he was confined to an asylum where he died of dementia in 1856. Franz List (1811-1886) Franz List was not merely a composer and pianist?he was a sensation, perhaps the most colorful artistic composer of the nineteenth century. His father, who worked at the court of Count Shysters, gave him his first music lessons when he was six years old. List gave more than a thousand concerts, from Ireland to Turkey, from Sweden played at the keyboard with a lighted cigar between his fingers. Lists concerts in the asses became our modern-day piano recital. The majority of Lists piano compositions reflect his advanced virtuosity. He was a productive composer, and rote works at several levels of difficulty, some being manageable for intermediate and even beginner level pianists. Abscessed (Farewell) is a beautiful short piece based on an old Russian folk song and Engages Grid are examples of this less virtuosic style and are the two cases of Legalization I participated in. List hobnobbed with composers FRRà ©dà ©rice Chopin, Hector Burlier, Robert Schumann, and his daughter married Richard Wagner. His most famous achievement was the creation of what would become known as the symphonic poem, a kind of orchestral musical piece that calls to mind a poem, a story, or a painting. He observed that a program provided a means by which to protect the listener against a wrong poetical interpretation and to direct his attention to the poetical idea of the whole. In 1860, one of Lists rivals, Johannes Brahms, co-published a statement against him and other modern composers. By his death, he had written more than 700 compositions. FRRà ©dà ©rice Chopin (1810-1849) Chopin is considered Pollards greatest composer, although Chopin spent the rest of his life mainly in France, he became a voice for Polish musical nationalism. In Paris, Chopin found his delicate style didnt always charm he larger concert audiences, who had been exposed to the works of Franz Schubert and Ludwig Van Beethoven. FRRà ©dà ©rice Chopin concentrated his efforts on piano composition and was a solid influence on composers who admired him. Chopin was physically slight and somewhat sickly. He was also introverted and hated performing in public. Chopin was a piano virtuoso and a composer, but he never let the physical challenges of the piano surpass his basic musical ideas. Chopin was a rarity among Romantic composers?he wrote only works for solo piano or ensemble pieces in which the dream-like nocturnes embodied the spirit of musical Romanticism. He formed a friendship with Franz List and Chopin received the first key endorsement from an exceptional contemporary when Robert Schumann, reviewing Chopping Pop. 2 Variations in the Alignment musicales Getting (his first published article on music), declared: Hats off, gentlemen! A genius.. Chopping innovations in style, musical form, and harmony, and his association of music with nationalism were influential throughout and after the late Romantic period. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Born in Hamburg, Germany, on May 7, 1833, Brahms as the great master of symphonic and sonata style in the second half of the 19th century. He can be viewed as the hero of the Classical tradition of Joseph Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. During this term, I listened to the German Requiem (Nine Deutsche Requiem), Abrahams Lullaby and Brahmas Violin Concerto in D major. The music of Brahms unfolds as patterns of pure, abstract sound within the stiff limits of traditional forms. While Brahms could write lovely romantic melodies, he was, in fact, a developer in the tradition of Bach and Beethoven. Brahms employed the art of laying double stops, a technique in which a violinist holds or stops two and never wrote an opera, nor did he ever write in the characteristic 19th century form of the tone poem. He strongly believed in absolute music, music that does not rely upon a concrete scene or narrative as the tone poem does. It is instrumental music free of text or any pre-existing program. His works were labeled old-fashioned by the New German School whose principal figures included F. List and Wagner. Brahms admired some of Wagers music and admired List as a great pianist, but in 1860, he attempted to organize a public protest against some of the wilder excesses of their music. Although Brahms may often be regarded as one of the last defenders of the Romantic Period, he was a supporter of form and logic within his works in contrast to the opulence and excesses of many of his contemporaries. Hector Burlier (1803-1869) Hector Burlier was one of the most original figures in the history of music. He was born in 1803 near the mountain city of Greenbelt, France. He had no regular training in music theory or composition and little exposure to the music of the great masters. In his mind, there was always a connection between music and the written word. Burlier rarely used such standard forms as sonata-allegro or theme and variations. Instead, he preferred to create forms that flowed from the particular narrative of the story at hand. Burlier created the first program symphony a symphony with the usual three, four, or five movements in which the individual movements together tell a tale or depict a succession of particular events or scenes. This term I listened to Symphonies Fantasies, Pop. 14 Songs Dune Unit Du Sabbath and found wild swings of mood expressed in the music. Burlier called for enormous performing forces. He added new instruments to the orchestra and called for traditional instruments to be played in non-traditional ways. Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) and Ballet Music The tone poems which were a one-movement work for orchestra captured the emotions and events of a story through the soaring music of Peter Tchaikovsky. He excelled in an artistic genre that others did not: ballet. In his early years, Tchaikovsky entered the Moscow Conservatory in his native Russia. Tchaikovsky realized that the ballet required Just the compositional skills that he possessed. His genius was to create one resting melody and mood after another?to fashion one vivid scene and then move on to the next. Tchaikovsky short-segment style proved perfect for the ballet. Now, the terms Russian and ballerina seem inseparably interconnected. Tchaikovsky gift was not in the development of thematic material but in the invention of striking melodies. Peter Tchaikovsky is known today primarily for his tone poems, such as Romeo and Juliet and The 1812 Overture, and ballets, such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, which I enjoyed watching in their full length on Youth. From the Baroque to the early Romantic age, opera was typically neatly divided into reiterative (plain speech or recitative, which advanced the story) and songs (which paused the story to highlight key elements). In the mid/late Romantic age, opera tended to embrace continuous narrative, in which the story unfolds constantly throughout both speech, recitative and songs. The distinction between recitative and songs was often blurred, as recitative became more lyrical, and songs came to lack principal styles of opera -P Italian and German. Italian opera was to a great extent a vehicle of good melodies and exciting tunes with less emphasis on drama, while German operas were more concerned with drama and perhaps less so with memorable tunes. Two of the most prominent composers from this period are Verdi in Italy and Wagner in Germany. Italy Italian opera experienced a dramatic shift in tone throughout the Romantic period. The early Romantic was dominated by lively comic opera, the mid/late Romantic by starkly serious opera. Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) twenty-six operas, La Scalar Opera House in Milan, Nabisco launched Verses career in Europe. He worked for the overthrow of the Austrian government, which then ruled most of Italy. By coincidence, the name Verdi (Green in Italian). La Trivia (1853) The Woman Gone Astray, Aid (1871. Verdi replaces simple recitative, accompanied only by basso continuo, with orchestral accompanied recitative accompanist (recitative accompanied by the orchestra instead of merely the harpsichord; the opposite of simple recitative) . He is a composer squarely in the tradition of Italian bell canto opera, he pays attention to the solo voice and on a lyrical, beautiful vocal line. In 1861, Verdi wrote the stunning La Forgo del Destine commissioned by the Imperial Theatre in SST. Petersburg, Russia. The music of the overture begins with the famous Fate Motif, an ominous three E notes in unison in the brass. His grand-opera Aid premiered in Cairo as part of the celebrations of the opening of the Suez Canal and became an instant success. I saw the opera Aid with my Mother when I was a young girl at what was then the Pacific Coliseum. Aid is a drama on a religious theme, full of processions, prayers, a baptism and naturally, a crusade. I remember seeing live elephants and horses which performed on the giant Egyptian themed stage. Giuseppe Verdi wrote opera for popular appeal, full of excellent, melodic arias and choruses which are still popular today and performed regularly throughout the world a hundred years after is death. Germany In the Romantic period, serious German opera finally attained prominence equal to its Italian and French counterparts. Romantic German opera typically featured supernatural characters and plots drawn from Germanic mythology; in some cases, ordinary humans are drawn into supernatural matters. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) The Romantic imagination chose to model itself on the Middle Ages. The tantalizing discovery of ancient German literature went hand in hand with the growth functional tradition of German opera, one led by Richard Wagner. Wagner could barely play the IANA, let alone any instrument, and was an indifferent score reader. However, he composed heroic themes and powerful orchestral climaxes. The compositions I listened to were Tristan undo Soled {Lifebelts} (1865), and Deer Ring des Unbelieving (The Ring of the Unbelieving) a set of four operas. The Ring cycle together tells the tale vociferating legend. Wagner created his Ring by adapting the myths from Iceland and Germany. Wagers music drama differs from predictable Italian opera in many ways. Aria, recitative, duet, would no longer bring the dramatic action to a halt in order to spotlight the vocal flourishes of a soloist. Instead, he wrote a seamless flow of identical solo singing and recitative, what is called endless melody. With Wagner, the orchestra is everything. The thoughts, both conscious and unconscious, of the main characters are projected through short, suggestive musical motives called a leitmotif (signature tune), a distinctive unit of music designed to represent a character, object, or idea. Wagner removed ensemble singing almost entirely. Wagner banished the melodic aria to the wings. He avoided melodic repetition, symmetry, and regular cadences?all things that can make a tune catchy; his melodies are long-flowing, nonrestrictive, and not particularly song-like. Wagner epitomizes chromatics in 19th century. As the tuneful aria decreased in quality, the role of the orchestra increased. A bigger orchestra demanded, in turn, more forceful singers. To be heard above an orchestra of nearly a hundred players, large, specially trained voices were needed: the so-called Wagnerian tenor and Wagnerian soprano. Wagner asked why anyone after Beethoven bothered to write symphonies at all. Wagner solicited the money to build his own opera house at Bayreuth, Germany. Here the first Bayreuth Festival took place. During the second half of the nineteenth century, a contrasting type of opera developed in Europe, one more in tune with the social truths of the day called realistic opera. Georges Baizes Carmen (1875) Baizes realistic opera Carmen is full of alluring melodies including the well-known and beloved Hibernia. The Hibernia, which introduces the character Carmen, makes use of a then-popular Spanish song. Hibernia means the thing from Havana. Careens rich melody, and finally her soaring voice on the word L amour (Love) as the chorus accompanies is instantly recognizable and incredibly virtuosic. In shaping these melodies, Baize borrowed phrases from various Spanish popular songs, folk songs, and flamenco tunes which were folk songs of southern Spain infused with gypsy elements. In France, Baize was a most prominent composer, and two of his operas remain in the repertoire to this day. Carmen is a story of tragic love and has many famous arias, including the Flower song, the Toreadors song and the Hibernia. Listening to the mezzo soprano voice accompanied by piano and a mixed-voice choir, I hear the use of rubout to emphasis the importance of the text at the end of the excerpt. Giaconda Puccini La bobà ©me 1896) Giaconda Puccini (1858-1924) Italian realistic opera goes by its own distinct name, version opera. Version is Italian for realism. Puccini most famous of all version operas?is La bobà ©me or Bohemian Life. A bohemian is somebody, often a writer or an artist, who does not live according to the conventions of society. La bobà ©me is well known for its glorious arias and duets, above all the You Tube video of Lucian Protractor sings Chew gelid mania. I hear the gradual path of his voice moving from low to high, speech to song, over the course fever more passionate and increasingly beautiful romantic work. The aria typically starts syllabicate as if the character is beginning a conversation. As the speakers ardor grows, the voice gains passion and becomes grander, with the strings doubling the melody to add warmth Parisian life, including the hustle and bustle of Christmas Eve in the street outside the Cafeà © Moms and dawn on a winter day on the outskirts of the city. The Late Romantic Symphony and Concerto The late Romantics wallowed happily in symphonies with more than four movements, symphonies of enormous length, and symphonies with voices, organs and other instruments usually inessential to the symphony orchestra. The orchestra itself so far exceeded the modest of Classical proportions that it certainly altered the symphonic form. Throughout the Romantic era, composers continued to produce these large- scale orchestral statements, and persisted in calling them symphonies. For a while, the late-Romantic symphony seemed a traditional impulse a clinging to the warm colors and tonal comforts of a large orchestra in the face of a sharp modernist sensibility. Notable composers of symphonies and concertos in the late-Romantic period include Peter Tchaikovsky, Antonio Devoid and Gustavo Mailer. Kindergà ¤rtners (Songs on the Death of Children) is a song cycle, a sort of concept album for voice and orchestra by Gustavo Mailer. The works are written in Mailers late-romantic style, and conveys a mixture of feelings: anguish, fantasy resuscitation of the children, resignation. The final song ends in a major key and a mood of transcendence. Throughout the nineteenth century, the symphonic movements got progressively longer, and so composers wrote fewer symphonies. Schumann and Brahms composed only four; Mendelssohn, five; Tchaikovsky, six; and Devoid, Burner, and Mailer, nine each. No one approached the 40-odd symphonies of Mozart, to say nothing of the 106 of Haydn. A Classical concerto may last twenty minutes, a Romantic one forty. Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) Russia was one of the first countries to develop its own national style of art music, one that was distinct and separate from the traditions of German orchestral music and the operatic styles of Italy and Germany. A nationalist spirit was passed too group of five young composers (Brooding, Cut, Balkier, Rims-Karaoke, and Mussorgsky) centered in SST. Petersburg, whose aim it was to write purely Russian music free of European influence. Modest Mussorgsky composed a boldly inventive tone poem, Night on Bald Mountain (1867, used prominently in Walt Disneys Fantasia), and an imaginative set of miniatures (character pieces) called Pictures at an Exhibition (1874). Pictures at an Exhibition give listeners the impression of enjoying a leisurely stroll into and through an art gallery, moving from one image to the next. To provide harmony within the structure of these musical pictures, the Mussorgsky thought of combining a regular interlude, which he called Promenade. With the Promenade, we enter not any gallery, UT one filled with purely Russian art. The tempo is marked Fast but resolute, in the Russian manner. The meter continually shifts?a characteristic of folk music. The meter is irregular, as infill dance, with alternating five- and six-beat measures, and the melody is built on a pentatonic scale , which uses only five notes instead of the usual seven notes. Pictures at an Exhibition is now best known in the orchestrated version by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), completed in 1922. Perhaps by coincidence, the first attempts at making color motion pictures occurred about this same time. Ravels version greatly developed the impact of the music by replacing the black- and-white sounds of the piano with the blooming color of the full late-Romantic A violent social disruption that shook Europe was the outbreak of World War l. The strongest challenge to the authority of the Germans came from their enemies, the French. The earliest indications of modernism were French artists and writers, who abandoned the grandiose subjects and expressions of Romanticism. Impressionist artists wished to capture on canvas the freshness of their first impressions and were assonated with the continuous change in the appearance of their subjects through varied treatment of light and color. French composers began to ridicule the sentimentality of Romanticism and the lavish structures of German music which was said to be too pretentious and preposterous. This new music was given the name Impressionism. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Debussy spent most of his time in the company of poets and painters. Prà ©elude leapà ©s-midi dun fauna (Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun), and the symphonic poem La mere (The Sea, 1905), were the works I studied this term. The composer believed that music doesnt need to progress and evolve to be pleasing to the listener. To Debussy, color and texture might exist independent of the melody and, perhaps, overshadow it, preferring fleeting splashes of sound color rather than sweeping sinkable melodies or musical development. There are no repeating rhythms or clear-cut meters to push the Debussy music forward; instead of a melody as we know it, I hear a twisting, undulating swirl of sound. Debussy music honors the distinctive colors of instruments, especially woodwinds, to suggest vibrant moods and sensations. From Debussy forward, imposers began to think of color as an independent expressive element, capable of eliciting a strong emotional response. The technological advancements that led to the modern symphony orchestra transformed nineteenth-century music. Our reaction to the orchestra today is very different from the response of nineteenth-century listeners. Apart from the military cannon and the steam engine, the nineteenth-century orchestra produced the loudest sonic level of any human machine. The big sound?and the big contrasts were new and startling, and audiences packed ever-larger concert halls to hear them. In 1 Corinthians 3:3 it tells us that for you are carnal minded still. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? To be carnal is to behave like men, thus its opposite (spirituality) is simply to behave like God. Spirituality is simply being godly, or possessing godliness. A fine working definition of spirituality says knowing God so I can please God. And, this is what godliness (spirituality) is all about. Paul makes this clear: If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord (1 Cor. 14:37). Spirituality is forever tied to knowing God and doing Gods will. Lets break these ideas out. In our society, spirituality has come to mean so many different views. First, much of todays spirituality movement is certain no one source holds all truth. Second view is doing what you want, how you want, when you want. Now American spirituality really is seen as a do it yourself religion. People are practicing vision quests, nature hikes, or just about anything else any one wants to do. So Doing what you like and telling people it was a spiritual experience is what people are doing today. We often hear the word spi rituality used to signify that one has faith in a higher power. Spirituality as it is seen in Christianity is to believe in God. We believe that God loves us. We believe that Jesus died for us. We believe that Jesus rose from the death with all power in his hand. We believe that our rebellious attitudes and transgressions against God not only keep us from a real and personal relationship but from eternal salvation as well. Spirituality can do nothing; its believing in and worshipping a higher being. Spirituality as it relates to Christianity says believe on a merciful God that loves and offers us redemption in spite of, and because of, our sins. Therefore it makes a way for us to know His eternal grace without you having to do anything but believe that Truth. If we were to survey the contemporary scene today with no pretensions at being exhaustive, we would notice a renewed interest in traditional spiritual paths together with an almost confusing bunch of new developments. In recent years there has been a lot of interest in Christian spirituality, especially in its more contemplative aspects. It is this very aspect that people have had a more practical view than a theoretical orientation, and is to be found among lay people as well as priests and religious. What we are seeing in this widespread I believe, that is not good but is happening that is a Contemporary Christian Spirituality. This type of spirituality has become a growing effect on Christian spirituality for this new century, and these groups point to four major characteristics that spirituality would have: (1) the rediscovery and reevaluation of the riches of the Christian spiritual tradition, (2) a new psychological awareness born out of an encounter with depth psychology, (3) a living and loving contact at the level of practice with other spiritual paths, and (4) a new sense of closeness and reverence for the earth. I donââ¬â¢t think it would be difficult to reach some kind of agreemen t about what is happening today and what the future might hold. In every one of these four areas we are faced with real serious problems if we do not address the issue. People of all walks of life felt compelled to ask themselves whether they, too, were being called to become contemplatives. What is needed, instead, is a genuinely interactive approach in which philosophy, theology and psychology all retain their distinctive natures and make their own contributions. Then the way is opened for an enriched Christian spirituality in which the life of prayer and the process of individuation, while viewed as distinct processes, are also seen as interpenetrating and vitally interacting in the one concrete psyche. These four problems can serve as examples of the kinds of challenges that exist in each of the four areas that are converging to create a Christian spirituality of the future. The monastic/communal dimension recognizes that Christian spirituality requires a relational expression. Even those called to the deepest kinds of solitude need some form of community for discernment, support, guidance and grounding. In the past, Christian mysticism was growing primarily in monasteries, and it was predicted that mysticism would be the future. This type of religion was in pursuit of a strong communion and connection the community. Contemplation is grounded in Christââ¬â¢s instruction about prayer: ââ¬Å"whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward youâ⬠(Matthew 6:6). These key elements for contemplative practice, Secrecy, silence, solitude, and withdrawal we seek to encounter them to see the face of God in darkness, loneliness, and stillness. Here we move beyond the certainties of the mind into the paradox and ambiguity of unknowing. Many Christian contemplati ves and the practitioners of other contemplative paths have begun to see that the path of contemplation is the path of entering into altered or higher forms of consciousness. The transformation engages them and the community on how they relate to the world as a whole. So while many may be having a strong appeal to dismiss contemplative practice as a form of spiritual self-indulgence, in reality it is an essential component to maintaining healthy relationships: with God, with ourselves, and with one another. While everyone has a right to believe whatever they want to about God; and the right to believe not in God it is their chose. Those practicing religions which deny who Jesus is cannot be indwelt by God the Holy Spirit. The many physical, psychological, and social stressors that often accompany life-threatening diseases that an individual is facing with terminal illnesses Spirituality may be particularly important for them. In addition, the unpredictable nature of such illnesses may limit the effectiveness of traditional coping strategies. Understanding the relationship between spirituality and psychological well-being requires an understanding of the relationship between institutional religion and spirituality. They have said that religion and spirituality are somewhat the same but they are not and have important distinctions. Spirituality can exist both within and outside of a religious framework. People who say that they are spiritual may not be religious. Religion, on the other hand, denotes an organized system of beliefs, practices, and ways of worship. Now religion maybe a way to express our spirituality but religion is less on the spiritual aspect but more traditional has rituals and has soci al interaction. ââ¬Å"Schizophrenia remains a debilitating, often chronic disease that can be associated with impairment in multiple domains of functioning (1). The concept of recovery (2) may be useful in caring for patients with schizophrenia, through its emphasis on personal achievement rather than symptom reductionâ⬠(Huguelet, Mohr, Borras, Gillieron, Brandt 2006). Looking from this view religion is defined in a broad sense as including both spirituality and religious is helpful for patients who maybe suffering with a disease. A study reported showed they examined the extent to which religion helped outpatients with schizophrenia to cope with their illness. The outcome they came up with was that religion is important for patients who have or suffer with a chronic psychotic illness and may not be that important for clinicians than in the general population. A patientââ¬â¢s religions practices and spirituality is what they use to get through hard times and is most often neglected by most doctors. In this article Spirituality and the Black Helping Tradition in Social Work they discussed spirituality practice with individuals, groups, and communities of African descent. Elmer P. Martin and Joanne M. Martin have published extensively in the field of social work, with a particular emphasis on the black family. Their focus on early black caregivers and social workers use of spirituality in their work with black people is a rich resource for the varying fields of mental health practice to understand the historical context of race and oppression in working with African Americans. So looking at that spirituality is broken up in so many levels and that was just a small piece of a big pie. When assessing spiritually it contains so many areas that people look at I guess when faced with issues. Here are some issues spirituality is used for, nature of the holy, actions of the holy, personal responsibility, rituals and practices, affective responses, vocation, community, grief, forgiveness , hope, and meaning. These areas take time to understand and some practice to learn how to use them effectively in the treatment process. Fortunately, there are religiously trained professionals who work with these complicated patient issues, and they are called chaplains. When a psychiatrist and chaplain work together to address the complexities of a patients religious/spiritual issues, the patient is better served, and treatment is optimized. Another study showed that during the six-month period of a person that was a recovering alcoholic they use spirituality as part of their sobriety including daily spiritual experiences, use of religious practices, forgiveness, positive use of religion for coping, and feelings of purpose in life. The main finding from another study called Religious Affiliation and Suicide Attempt was that those with some type of religious affiliations were less likely to have a history of suicide attempts, the best predictor of future suicide or attempts. Individuals with religious connections have reported to have less suicide attempts at the time of an evaluation. If the has a severity of depression, number of adverse life events, and severity of hopelessness they show less likely to commit suicide. The reason for the risk factor for suicidal acts to be less likely is, because it was found to be related to religion. Therefore, religion may provide a positive force that counteracts suicidal ideation in the face of depression, hopelessness, and stressful events. Having a religious commitment promotes social ties and reduces alienation. If you have a weaker family ties in religiously unaffiliated subjects, and family members are reported to be more likely to provide reliable emotional support, nurturance, and reassurance of worth. Having some type of spirituality as it relates to Christianity proves to be helpful in your everyday life. Spirituality is very much has a place in the world and is a method for learning to know God and our relationship to Him. Spiritual practices, such as spiritual healing, utilize the understanding and the power of the laws of Spirit. There are actually laws of Spirit that awaken man from material practices to the reality of God. What weââ¬â¢re discovering with our understanding of Spirituality is God, and that weââ¬â¢re always in Spiritââ¬â¢s presence, and weââ¬â¢re under His divine, beautiful, and powerful laws. If weââ¬â¢re not deceived by the so-called material or physical laws, and we realize weââ¬â¢re still under those spiritual laws, those spiritual laws reign right where we are physically. And so they have all say about whatââ¬â¢s going on. And we can still govern ourselves according to manââ¬â¢s law because we are following Godââ¬â¢s law. In Closing, Spirituality should give you a perception to be grateful for even the small things are the grace and the beauty of God being expressed to us and they can be a really big help in times like these. And lastly the three foundational characteristics of spirituality are Faith, Hope and Love. Spirituality is easily identified in people who have a faith and belief in the power and presence of God in their lives. Their faith enables them to believe that God is helping them in their times of trouble, sorrow and pain. Faith is the belief that God will never abandon or forget you during your time of need. Spirituality is easily identified in people who have hope and trust in Gods mercy, wisdom and justice. Their hope enables them to let go and let God. Their hope enables them to hand over their sense of over responsibility, guilt, rescuing and enabling to Gods hands. Their hope enables them to take a tough love stance in order to get help for the troubled persons in their lives. Ho pe is reflected in the following prayer: Serenity Prayer, God, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Spirituality is easily identified in people who are active in showing love, concern and generosity to others. And in the end they are able to make a difference in peoples lives. References Austin, L. The paragraph has been variously defined as a subdivision in a longer written passage, a group of sentences (or sometimes just one sentence) about a specific topic, and a grammatical unit typically consisting of multiple sentences that together express a complete thought. In his 2006 book A Dash of Style, Noah Lukeman describes the paragraph break as one of the most crucial marks in the punctuation world. Etymology:à Paragraph is from the Greek word which means to write beside. Observations A new paragraph is a wonderful thing. It lets you quietly change the rhythm, and it can be like a flash of lightning that shows the same landscape from a different aspect. (Babel, Isaac interviewed by Konstantin Paustovsky in Isaac Babel Talks About Writing, The Nation, March 31, 1969.) 10 Effective Paragraph Criteria Lois Laase and Joan Clemmons offer the following list of 10 helpful suggestions for writing paragraphs. This is adapted from their book, Helping Students Write... The Best Research Reports Ever: Easy Mini-Lessons, Strategies, and Creative Formats to Make Research Manageable and Fun. Keep the paragraph on one topic.Include a topic sentence.Use supporting sentences that give ââ¬â¹details or facts about the topic.Include vivid words.Make sure it does not have run-on sentences.Include sentences that make sense and stick to the topic.Sentences should be in order and make sense.Write sentences that begin in different ways.Make sure the sentences flow.Be sure sentences are mechanically correct - spelling, punctuation, capitalization, indentation. Topic Sentences in Paragraphs Although the topic sentence is often the first sentence of the paragraph, it does not have to be. Furthermore, the topic sentence is sometimes restated or echoed at the end of the paragraph, although again it does not have to be. However, a well-phrased concluding sentence can emphasize the central idea of the paragraph as well as provide a nice balance and ending. A paragraph is not a constraining formula; in fact, it has variations. In some instances, for example, the topic sentence is not found in a single sentence. It may be the combination of two sentences, or it may be an easily understood but unwritten underlying idea that unifies the paragraph. Nevertheless, the paragraph in most college writing contains discussion supporting a stated topic sentence.... (Brandon, Lee. At a Glance: Paragraphs, 5th ed., Wadsworth, 2012.) Rules of Paragraphing As an advanced writer, you know that rules are made to be broken. But that is not to say that these rules are useless. Sometimes it is good to avoid a one-sentence paragraph - it can sound too brisk and implies a lack of penetration and analysis. Sometimes, or perhaps most of the time, it is good to have a topic sentence. But the awful fact is that when you look closely at a professional writers work, you will see that the topic sentence is often missing. In that case, we sometimes say it is implied, and perhaps that is true. But whether we want to call it implied or not, it is obvious that good writers can get along without topic sentences most of the time. Likewise, it is not a bad idea to develop only one idea in a paragraph, but frankly, the chance of developing several ideas often arises and sometimes doing so even characterizes the writing of professionals. (Jacobus, Lee A. Substance, Style, and Strategy, Oxford University Press, 1998.) Strunk and White on Paragraph Length In general, remember that paragraphing calls for a good eye as well as a logical mind. Enormous blocks of print look formidable to readers, who are often reluctant to tackle them. Therefore, breaking long paragraphs in two, even if it is not necessary to do so for sense, meaning, or logical development, is often a visual help. But remember, too, that firing off many short paragraphs in quick succession can be distracting. Paragraph breaks used only for show read like the writing of commerce or of display advertising. Moderation and a sense of order should be the main considerations in paragraphing. (Strunk, Jr., William and E.B. White, The Elements of Style, 3rd ed., Allyn Bacon, 1995.) Uses of One-Sentence Paragraphs Three situations in essay writing can occasion a one-sentence paragraph: (a) when you want to emphasize a crucial point that might otherwise be buried; (b) when you want to dramatize a transition from one stage in your argument to the next; and (c) when instinct tells you that your reader is tiring and would appreciate a mental rest. The one-sentence paragraph is a great device. You can italicize with it, vary your pace with it, lighten your voice with it, signpost your argument with it. But itââ¬â¢s potentially dangerous. Donââ¬â¢t overdo your dramatics. And be sure your sentence is strong enough to withstand the extra attention itââ¬â¢s bound to receive when set off by itself. Houseplants wilt in direct sun. Many sentences do as well. (Trimble, John R. Writing with Style: Conversations on the Art of Writing. Prentice Hall, 2000.) Paragraph Length in Business and Technical Writing A paragraph should be just long enough to deal adequately with the subject of its topic sentence. A new paragraph should begin whenever the subject changes significantly. A series of short, undeveloped paragraphs can indicate poor organization and sacrifice unity by breaking an idea into several pieces. A series of long paragraphs, however, can fail to provide the reader with manageable subdivisions of thought. Paragraph length should aid the readers understanding of idea. (Alred, Gerald J., Charles T. Brusaw, and Walter E. Oliu, The Business Writers Handbook, 10th ed., Bedford/St. Martins, 2012.) The Paragraph as a Device of Punctuation The paragraph is a device of punctuation. The indentation by which it is marked implies no more than an additional breathing space. Like the other marks of punctuation...it may be determined by logical, physical, or rhythmical needs. Logically it may be said to denote the full development of a single idea, and this indeed is the common definition of the paragraph. It is, however, in no way an adequate or helpful definition. (Read, Herbert. English Prose Style, Beacon, 1955.) Scott and Dennys Definition of a Paragraph A paragraph is a unit of discourse developing a single idea. It consists of a group or series of sentences closely related to one another and to the thought expressed by the whole group or series. Devoted, like the sentence, to the development of one topic, a good paragraph is also, like a good essay, a complete treatment in itself. (Scott, Fred Newton, and Joseph Villiers Denny, Paragraph-Writing: A Rhetoric for Colleges, rev. ed., Allyn and Bacon, 1909.) Development of the Paragraph in English The paragraph as we know it comes into something like settled shape in Sir William Temple (1628-1699). It was the product of perhaps five chief influences. First, the tradition, derived from the authors and scribes of the Middle Ages, that the paragraph-mark distinguishes a stadium of thought. Second, the Latin influence, which was rather towards disregarding the paragraph as the sign of anything but emphasis - the emphasis-tradition being also of medieval origin; the typical writers of the Latin influence are Hooker and Milton. Third, the natural genius of the Anglo-Saxon structure, favorable to the paragraph. Fourth, the beginnings of popular writing - of what may be called the oral style, or consideration for a relatively uncultivated audience. Fifth, the study of French prose, in this respect a late influence, allied in its results with the third and fourth influences. (Lewis, Herbert Edwin. The History of the English Paragraph, 1894.) 19c writers reduced the lengths of their paragraphs, a process that has continued in the 20c, particularly in journalism, advertisements, and publicity materials. (McArthur, Tom. Paragraph. The Oxford Companion to the English Language, Oxford University Press,à 1992.) A love affair between rich Tokyo dilettante, Shimamura, and a young geisha, Komako, is the main story of the novel. However, cultural symbolism interwoven in the plot of the story makes it look like a Japanese puzzle. It is both interesting to read and complex to understand all the meanings of writerââ¬â¢s cultural riddles. One has to be well aware of Japanese cultural nuances to accept Kawabataââ¬â¢s book as easy reading of a love story. Romantic relationship is not the main idea the writer wants to express. There are much more issues of cultural identity which are raised in this literary work. To understand and appreciate Kawabataââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Yukiguniâ⬠a reader has to be competent in Japanese culture and literature enough. Also difference in mentality and perceptions of Japanese and Western culture might influence on understanding Kawabataââ¬â¢s work. There is no wonder in different interpretations of the main messagesââ¬â¢ meaning, because Kawabataââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"characters are determined by forces so completely beyond their control that these characters typically appear to the Western reader almost pathologically passive and irresoluteâ⬠(Pollack, 102). At the same time, however, life and human relationships in different cultures are much alike. There is no wonder that a non-Japanese reader will associate himself/herself with Shimamura or Komato. Furthermore, most of Kawabataââ¬â¢s works are claimed to be plotless. Reading ââ¬Å"Snow Countryâ⬠requires some meditation and contemplation. Otherwise, the reader might lose not only interest, but complete understanding of the essence of this book. Having enough knowledge about Japan and its culture, one has to be able to read between the lines to understand Japaneseness of Kawabataââ¬â¢s novel. At some points, these philosophers even get purely judgmental about other intellectualsââ¬â¢ approaches and I felt that highlighting such judgments and arguments would help in getting the deeper flavor of the whole issue in a multidimensional manner. I basically tried searching most of the references from hard copies of books and peer-reviewed journals though I also took support of some credible websites about which I specially tried making sure that they contained valid and reviewed information. The books I referenced in the paper throw light on Reganââ¬â¢s and Singerââ¬â¢ works and I chose them because they help contrasting Reganââ¬â¢s approach from that of Singerââ¬â¢s. I also laid stress on books composed by Francione becau se his works help immensely in understanding the core ideology of animal liberation movement. .. Here, the The procedures that the researcher use in this investigatory project were all experimental and were based on Scientific Method. The researcher used environment-friendly materials which can be made into biodegradable plastics that will not harm the environment and will not add to pollution problems. Among th The result was found that the product exhibited the desirable properties of a biodegradable plastic thus the product is completely biodegradable at disposal. The researcher conclude that among the different vegetable starches, _____________ starch is the most effective raw material for the development of biodegradable plastics due to its availability in large quantity, its relatively low cost and its biodegradability. INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study The ever unending problem of waste disposal specifically the non-biodegradable one had contributed to the alarming worldwide problem of global warming. As an example, the experience storm surge of the island of Leyte due to increase of sea level, increase of water level among streets during heavy rain due to clogged drains, canals and sewerage. Using vegetable starches in developing biodegradable plastic is one big step to lessen, if not total eliminate, our global concerns. Generally, this study is conducted to replace the conventional non-biodegradable plastics to a more friendly biodegradable plastics using different vegetable starches. The cassava root is long and tapered, with a firm, homogeneous flesh encased in a detachable rind, about 1mm thick, rough and brown on the outside. Commercial varieties can be 5 to 10 cm in diameter at the top, and around 15 cm to 30 cm long. A woody cordon runs along the roots axis. The flesh can be chalk-white or yellowish. Cassava roots are very rich in starch, and contain significant amounts of calcium (50 mg/100g), phosphorus (40 mg/100g) and vitamin C (25 mg/100g). However, they are poor in protein and other nutrients. In contrast, cassava leaves are a good source of protein, and are rich in the amino acid lysine, though deficient in methionine and possibly tryptophan. These components are components of biodegradable plastic. The squash The sweet potato B. Significance of the Study Once one of these vegetable starches known, this study will be very essential in the production of biodegradable plastics, which can lessen the tremendous piled up non-biodegradable garbages made by plastics thereby reducing harmà to our environment. C. Statement of the Problem The problem is to compare which among the different vegetables; squash, sweet potato and cassava, which are rich in starch will be an effective component for biodegradable plastic. D. Hypothesis Cassava starch is the most effective component for biodegradable plastic. E. Scope and limitations This study will be focused on the comparison of the three common vegetables, namely, the squash, principal variable of this project is the cassava starch. The locale of this project is it could help save the environment and reduce use of plastic that takes a lot of years to degrade. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE The word plastic came from the Greek word plastikos, meaning capable of being molded. Plastics can be as hard as metal or as soft as silk. They can take any shape in almost any form due to the versatility of the carbon, the most common backbone of polymer chains. Plastics can be conveniently divided into two categories: semi-synthetic, in which the basic chain structure is derived from a natural product, such as cellulose; and synthetic, which is built up chemically from small units or monomers. Despite the various applications of plastics, drawbacks have been encountered in three major points. Firstly, there are certain chemicals used in the manufacture of .plastics that may cause allergic reactions. Three is a need man from these threat. Secondly, since cellulose films are biodegradable; they are readily attacked by bacteria. Films and packaging materials from synthetic polymers are normally attacked at a very low rate. New polymers such is nylon, polyvinyl chloride and Polystyrene have replaced cellulose, the pioneer plastic material. As a result, these plastic materials have become permanent wastes. There are various methods in making biodegradable plastics. The simplest is the production of plastic from the extraction of casein from milk. Casein is obtained in two ways by souring, with the use of lactic acid, arid by boiling together with an additive, such as acetic acid. Starch is a natural organic polymer manufactured by green plants through photosynthesis s to serve as metabolic reserve It occurs in the form of grains in many parts of the plant, principally in embryonic tissues such as seeds, fruits, roots and tubers. Polyvinyl alcohol is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, thermoplastic synthetic resin. It is usually used for grease-proofing paper, in adhesives, in gas- and oil-impervious films and Coatings. This substance, although soluble in water, is insoluble in Common organic solvents. Glycerol is the simplest trihydric alcohol. In commercial form, it is called glycerin. It is a colorless odorless and viscous liquid with a sweet taste. It is completely soluble in water and alcohol but is only slightly soluble in many common solvents, such as ether, ethyl acetate and dioxane. It is widely used in coatings and paints, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Plastic production is relatively new technology. Experiments are being conducted to relieve the negative effects of overproducing plastics. By changing its raw materials and additives, commercial plastic may be improved so that it will become degradable while retaining its good quality. Cassava (Manihot esculenta), also called manioc, tapioca or yuca, is one of the most important food crops in the humid tropics, being particularly suited to conditions of low nutrient availability and able to survive drought (Burrell, 2003). The plant grows to a height of 1 to 3 m and several roots may be found on each plant. Although cassava leaves are sometimes consumed, the major harvested organ is the tuber, which is actually a swollen root. The plant is propagated mostly from stem cuttings. A major limitation of cassava production is the rapid post-harvest deterioration of its roots which usually prevents their storage in the fresh state for more than a few days (Okezie and Kosikowski, 1982). Cassava ranks very high among crops that convert the greatest amount of solar energy into soluble carbohydrates per unit of area. Among the starchy staples, cassava gives a carbohydrate production which is about 40% higher than rice and 25% more than maize, with the result that cassava is the cheapest source of calories for both human nutrition and animal feeding. A typical composition of the cassava root isà moisture (70%), starch (24%), fiber (2%), protein (1%) and other substances including minerals (3%) Compared to other crops, cassava excels under suboptimal conditions, offering the possibility of using marginal land to increase total agricultural production (Cock, 1982). METHODOLOGY Cassava Tubers were ground and squeezed to extract its starch. Starch obtained was weighed and divided into three equal parts; 50 grams in trial 1, trial 2 and trial 3. T1, T2 and T3 also consisted of 50 ml Polyester resin and increasing variations of Polymer MEKP Hardener; 50 grams for T1, 100 grams for T2 and 150 grams in T3. The components in every treatment or trial were mixed, stirred and then poured in 3 different shirts with Petroleum Jelly and then sun-dried. Afterwards, different methods were used to test the effectivity of the plastic. T1, T2 and T3 were sun-dried but they did not look like a plastic at all. The researchers observed the product while waiting for it to dry but there were no signs of turning into a plastic. The Cassava starch was too thick and the researchers realized that it would not turn into a plastic because of its heavy weight and it would take more time before it would dry because of its thickness. After letting T1, T2 and T3 dry under the sun, it became hard. Although the researchers had unexpected results and the Cassava starch did not turn into plastic, studies have already proven that Cassava starch could be used for making various types of packaging products. Cassava is a promising raw material for the development of biodegradable plastics. There are a few problems with the argument that I will be discussing in detail in an attempt to illustrate exactly why ââ¬ËThe Ontological Argumentââ¬â¢ is unsatisfactory. The Definition of ââ¬ËGreaterââ¬â¢ St. Anselm of Canterbury defined God as ââ¬Å"that-than-which-a-greater-cannot-be-thoughtâ⬠(Bailey, 2002). The problem with this definition is that the term ââ¬Ëgreaterââ¬â¢ is surely up for interpretation. The term ââ¬Ëgreaterââ¬â¢ requires a comparison between itself and one or more things, which could pose a problem for Anselmââ¬â¢s argument; however Professor Thorp states that the only difference between these two things is that one exists in the mind, while the other exists in the mind and in reality. If we understand that a God that exists in the mind and in reality is greater than one that merely exists in the mind then we must understand that God exists. We need to examine this, however, much more closely to discover the problem with this statement; and I will do so using an example given to us by Professor Thorp. During the discussion of the Ontological argument, the professor asked us whether we would prefer ââ¬Ëa real beerââ¬â¢ on a hot day, or ââ¬Ëan imaginary beerââ¬â¢. The real one is preferable and it is greater than the imaginary one. But what type of beer was each person in the class imagining? There are multiple brands of beer available and it is quite possible that many people throughout the room were picturing a different beer. Which real beer was greater? This is not a question that I can answer because it lies in a matter of preference. We experience a similar problem when we think of ââ¬Ëa real Godââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëan imaginary Godââ¬â¢. Perhaps I perceive God in a specific way, and to me, he is a being ââ¬Å"that-than-which-none-greater-can-be-thoughtâ⬠(Bailey, 2002). This proves that my perception of God exists for me, but what of everyone elseââ¬â¢s perceptions of God? We must recognize a problem with this, in that everyone may perceive a ââ¬Ëgreaterââ¬â¢ God in a very different way. We know that there are different perceptions of the ââ¬Ëgreaterââ¬â¢ God because we have evidence of it in the various religions and the contrasting views of their God. With this in mind, all Anselm is able to prove with his argument is that every personââ¬â¢s individual perception of God does exist, but no on... ...comprehend or imagine Him. Because of this, God cannot be ââ¬Ëthoughtââ¬â¢, he can merely be defined as infinite. Since we cannot comprehend God in our thought, he no longer exists in our minds as an entity, but merely as a definition. Thus, since he no longer exists in our minds, there is no obligation to understand that he must exist in reality; an implication made in Anselmââ¬â¢s argument. à à à à à à à à à à Anselmââ¬â¢s Ontological argument is insufficient in proving that God exists. For the reasons above and further objections from various philosophers, I do not believe that Anselm can argue the existence of God with his current premises as they stand. I must say that despite my objections to Anselmââ¬â¢s Ontological argument, I respect his work done, and the tremendous thought process that must have occurred to conjure up such a case as was presented. It is definitely much easier to prove a mortal wrong than it is to prove the existence of something so great and so unknown. Anselmââ¬â¢s Ontological argument while intriguing does have some problems in my opinion that take away from its validity; but needless to say it is in and of itself quite astounding.
